In the PBS series, The New Yankee Workshop, Norm Abrams had an enormous variety of tools: clamps, router bits, jigs, saws, cutters and more. He always seemed to have the right tool to get a fancy molding or tight joint on his woodwork. At the beginning of each show he emphasized the importance of reading the instructions and knowing how to use power tools safely. As crafters of words, translators need to know how to use their computer tools effectively. Continuing a recurring series of NETA monthly meeting presentations, the February session will return to the subject of using Microsoft Word. Previously in the series, we have dealt with specific Word topics like using wildcards for searches and laying out tables. This time we will look at audience-submitted topics. Bruce D. Popp is an ATA Certified Translator for French into English and a US Patent and Trademark Office registered Patent Agent with a PhD in astronomy. In the past he has held various positions in NETA and the ATA; currently he is the French-ino-English Language Chair for the ATA Certification Program. In this day-to-day translation work, Bruce translates patents and scientific and technical documents. During slow periods he is translating the 1890 publication by French mathematical-physicist Henri Poincaré On the Three Body Problem and the Equations of Dynamics; in this work Poincaré mathematically proved that it is not possible to predict near collisions with asteroids or snowfall amounts as far in advance as you'd like. Bruce is also interested in three popular books that Poincaré wrote about 15 years later on science and philosophy of science.

by Thursday, Feb. 19th Directions: By public transportation: Take the Boston College Green Line to the St. Paul Street stop, just after the BU West stop when coming from downtown Boston. By car: Consider using an online map service or use your GPS system to find our location from where you are coming. The best option for parking is at 2-hour metered spots on the street in Brookline, such as St. Paul Street, Amory Street 1 block East, and Pleasant St. 1 block West. Metered parking on Commonwealth Avenue costs twice the rate in Brookline, and cars parked on Dummer Street by the apartment block will be towed. A parking garage is available at Agannis Arena (take Buick Street and go around to the back of the arena) assuming no arena event is scheduled for meeting day (calendar posted at http://www.agannisarena.com/events/calendar/calendar.asp).
